This cross had been carved in linden wood. It is a Celtic pattern that comes from the Isle of Man (VIII c.).
The Celtic cross is a form of Christian cross with a nimbus or ring surrounding the intersection of the arms and stem. It originated in the Early Middle Ages and was widely used across Ireland and Great Britain, especially in regions evangelized by Irish missionaries. It is particularly associated with the stone high crosses erected in these areas from the 9th through the 12th centuries.
There are a few hypotheses of the origin of the design - ranging from the pragmatic ones - the ring stabilized large wooden crosses that were prototypes of the stone ones - through influences of Coptic crosses (which were a combination of a cross and ankh hieroglyph - to neolithic and Bronze Age symbolism of sun discs and wheels.
