Historic wooden jewelry box featuring Urnes dragons

This box is made of linden wood. The lid features a hand-carved design. Source of the design: The Urnes style was the final phase of Scandinavian animal art in the second half of the 11th century and the early 12th century. The Urnes style takes its name from the north gate of the Urnes stave church in Norway, but most examples of this style are the runestones at Uppold in Sweden; for this reason, some scholars prefer to call it the runestone style. The style is characterized by slender, stylized animals interwoven into dense patterns. The animals’ heads are shown in profile, with slender, almond-shaped eyes, and upward-curving appendages on their noses and necks.
