A few words about medieval chests:

The chest is the most common and basic piece of medieval furniture. Wealthy nobles owned hundreds of chests, as evidenced by wills and death records. In the Middle Ages, chests served as both furniture and luggage. Chests were the most important piece of furniture in a medieval nobleman's home.
There were six general styles or classes of medieval chests: box chest, standard chest, Viking chest, six-board chest, chest and panel chest.
The design of chests was greatly influenced by their intended use. Designs without feet and legs were easier to travel with, especially by cart or wagon. Designs with legs kept the contents much cleaner and were less susceptible to the dirt and vermin of medieval floors. Rich decoration is rare on chests intended for travel, as it would easily be damaged and destroyed. Travel chests often had convex or curved lids to drain water. Chests intended for static storage usually had flat lids, which made them more useful as seating furniture or for other purposes. Travel chests were often covered with waxed leather to improve their weather resistance.
